LIC studio at moves10Liverpool Improvisation Collective (LIC) studio will be presenting an improvised jam session of live dance and film on Saturday 24 April, 6.45-7.45 at the LIC Studio, the Bluecoat.
1. Improvisation Laboratory Group
Improvisation Laboratory Group is a vibrant international and intergenerational group of artists from various disciplines - including dance, theatre, live art, visual art, and music - who have been meeting regularly at the Bluecoat since September 2009 for improvisational practice and ‘jam’ sessions.
LIC offers an informal studio sharing of their recent laboratory work using video and live projection in improvised performance.
2. Puddle Dance (2005) (3mins)
“I was walking past a massive puddle, shimmering, reflecting the sky… and I had a tremendous urge to jump in it…”
Puddle dance came out of a very simple idea and became a reflection on the limits society sets on the human body; what we are allowed to do in public. Dublin based choreographer Rachel Wynne was invited to collaborate on the project and the choreography based on very simple instructions was developed over the internet. The artists went off with their respective film-makers and made the piece, only to see the final outcomes when meeting to edit in England.
Playful and fun, was a favourite at Nottdance film night 2006.
Filmed in Dublin and Leicester. Original concept by Maria Malone. Choreographed, directed and edited by Maria Malone and Rachel Wynne (Expandance), camera work and art direction by Jonathan Hulson and Kate Hudson.
3. You Can’t Dance in a Bus-stop (2007)
I spent a large part of my time on public transport – this piece is about that.
Inspired by a particularly nasty bus shelter and continuing urges to dance in the street, this piece investigates the recurring theme of where dance can take place and the influence of our environment on our behaviour and bodily movement. Working in collaboration with dancer choreographer Penny Caffrey the project looked at 5 sites of public transport, bus-stops and train stations and built choreography specific to those sites.
Commissioned by Leap Festival Liverpool the ideas took the concrete form of a series of site specific performances and a 10 minute video edited by Maria Malone. Sensitive and humorous, received raucous applause at Leap Dance Festival 2007.
Filmed in Liverpool. Directed and edited by Maria Malone. Choreography and dancers Maria Malone and Penny Caffrey. Filmed by Dave Roberts

5. Where In The World..? (2010) presented by Movema (12mins)

‘Where In The World..?’ is an interactive project and short film based on people from all walks of life dancing around the world. By mixing footage and interviews contributed by friends, family, colleagues and the general public, Movema celebrates our shared love of dancing and the power of dance as a way of communicating with and understanding cultures far from our own.
Tonight's screening of the film, continues 'Where In The World..?' as an ongoing project so why not become part of Movema's inspiration by posting us footage of you dancing your dance in your chosen place?!
Please visit the 'Where In The World' page at Movema's website to find out more.
Directed by: Penny Caffrey and Maria Malone. Technical support: Jack Whiteley
Many thanks to everyone (too many to list here!) around the world who contributed footage, interviews and support.
